HOUSTON, Texas The American Hockey Leagues Houston Aeros have signed forward Ben Thomson to an amateur tryout, the team announced Wednesday.
Thomson, 24 (6/30/82), has played the last three seasons at the University of Alberta, totaling 160 points (57-103=160) in 130 games. His first two seasons came under the tutelage of Aeros head coach Rob Daum. Thomson has helped lead the Golden Bears to back-to-back championship seasons.
The 5-foot-7, 190-pound native of Coaldale, Alta., was a 2005-06 Canada West First Team All-Star and was also named to the University Cup All-Star team. In leading the Bears to the 2005 Canadian college hockey title, Thomson was named CIS University Cup Most Valuable Player, scoring two goals in a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over Saskatchewan. Prior to enrolling at the University of Alberta, Thomson played five-plus seasons of junior hockey with Medicine Hat of the Western Hockey League. He served as the Tigers team captain in 2002-03.
