AEROS DEFEAT FLAMES IN SHOOTOUT 3-2

MADSEN SCORES IN REGULATION AND OVERTIME TO BOOST AEROS OVER FLAMES

HOUSTON, Texas – Nolan Schaefer proved better in the shootout as the Houston Aeros earned two points and their fourth straight road victory in a shootout win against the Quad City Flames Wednesday night 3-2. Schaefer stopped 28 of 30 shots and improved his record to 5-0 in shootouts and Houston improved to 25-18-2-3 for 53 points. They now stand alone in fifth place in the West Division.

Morten Madsen scored a goal and had the game-winner in the shootout and John Scott scored his first goal of the season to provide the offense for Houston. Adam Pardy and Carsen Germyn scored the goals for the Flames who fell to 22-20-2-6 and remain in seventh place in the West Division. All four of the goals in the game were power play goals, Houston finished 2-5 and Quad City was 2-6 with the man advantage.

Madsen gave the Aeros a 1-0 lead on a power play goal at the 6:42 mark of the first period for his third goal of the season. Madsen received a backdoor pass from Brandon Rogers and stuffed under the leg of Flames’ goaltender Curtis McElhinney. The teams traded shots for the remainder of the first and the Aeros took the lead into the intermission.

The Flames tied the game at the 6:40 mark of the second period on a goal by Adam Pardy who slapped a shot through traffic that Aeros’ goaltender Nolan Schaefer never saw. John Scott and the Aeros quickly responded with a power play goal. Scott received a nice backdoor pass from Benoit Pouliot and redirected past McElhinney for his first goal and point of the season.

Germyn tied the game 7:04 into final period which proved to force the overtime. Nolan Schaefer stopped an initial attempt but couldn’t stop Germyn on the rebound.

The game remained scoreless through the third period and the overtime forcing the shootout. Schaefer stopped three of five attempts and Houston scored on three of their four attempts to claim the victory.

Notes:
- For the third straight game, the Aeros scored a power-play goal and it was the fourth game in the last five scoring with the man-advantage. The two power-play goals marked the first time in their last 10 contests the team has recorded a multiple power-play goal game, eighth of the season.
- Aeros’ D John Scott scored his first goal of the season at the 13:38 mark of the second period. Scott was playing forward for the Aeros as they were down a pair of forwards in Petr Kalus and Steve Kelly.
- G Anton Khudobin was recalled from ECHL Texas backed up Nolan Schaefer in the game as Barry Brust sat out with a leg injury.
- The game featured the second and third ranked penalty kills in the league however all four goals in regulation were scored on the power play.
