AEROS LOSE FIRST GAME OF 2008-09 TO MOOSE

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – The Houston Aeros scored first but gave up three goals in the final frame to lose to the Manitoba Moose 3-1 Friday night at MTS Centre. Houston became the last team in the American Hockey League to lose after starting the season 4-0-0-0. Nolan Schaefer stopped 28 of 30 shots in his first loss of the season and the Aeros were only able to manage 18 shots on goal for the game. The teams will meet up again tomorrow night at MTS Centre at 7:30 p.m. Tune into KNTH 1070-AM to listen, but the game will be joined in progress after the conclusion of the TCU football game.

Game Sheet

The Aeros skated to a scoreless first period for the first time this season. The period was not without fireworks though as Justin Falk and Derek Bootland fought just 1:33 into the opening frame. Manitoba outshot the Aeros 10-9, but neither team was able to get the all-important first goal.

Krys Kolanos, fresh off his reassignment from Minnesota, tallied the first goal of the game with a wrap-around attempt that beat Moose goaltender Cory Schneider with just 1:35 remaining in the second period. The goal was Kolanos’ fourth for the Aeros in three games played, but proved to be the only one Houston could muster against the stiff Moose defense.

Mark Cullen scored his second goal of the season and tied the game at one for Manitoba only 1:02 into the third period. At the 9:06 mark, Mario Bliznak took a feed from Mike Keane and snuck the puck in far post to give the Moose a 2-1 lead. The goal turned out to be the game-winner as Michel Ouellet tallied an empty net goal with 1:21 remaining to cap the game.

Neither team was able to score on the power play during the game with Houston missing on three chances and Manitoba missing on both of their chances. Houston was given a great opportunity to tie the game at 13:57 of the third period when Dirk Southern went to the box for slashing, but was unable to capitalize. The Moose held the Aeros to just 18 shots on net for the game and didn’t allow more than nine shots in a period.

Notes:
- The Aeros lost to the Moose for the first time in eight games. Houston had won the previous seven games in the series including all four in 2007-08.
- Krys Kolanos extended his goal-scoring streak to three games with his second period marker. He has four goals in three games.
- Houston was held without a power play goal for the second time in their first five games and first time since they went 0-4 on opening night against Chicago.
- The Aeros three shots in the second period marked the fewest shots on goal in a period this season, however they scored their only goal in the second.
