CHOPS COMEBACK TO BEAT AEROS 4-3

AEROS REMAIN IN FIFTH PLACE IN WEST DIVISION

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa Chops came back from a two-goal deficit to beat the Houston Aeros 4-3 Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Aeros’ forward Krys Kolanos tallied the first two goals of the game, but Houston (22-21-1-7) couldn’t hold on to the victory. Four different Chops scored goals, including one on the power play and one shorthanded, and David LeNeveu stopped 27 of 30 shots for his 14th win of the season.

The Aeros power play unit and Kolanos gave the visiting team a 2-0 lead in the first period. Kolanos opened the scoring on a blast from the top of the left circle at the 2:36 mark to give Houston a 1-0 lead. He was assisted by Corey Locke and John Lammers. Kolanos struck again at the 15:51 mark with a four-on-three power play goal on a slap shot that resembled his first score. He was again assisted by Locke and Maxim Noreau added the other assist giving Houston a 2-0 lead. The Aeros outshot Iowa 16-9 in the period and took the two-goal lead to the intermission.

Iowa started the comeback at the 4:17 mark of the second period on T.J. Trevelyan’s 16th goal of the season, an unassisted goal as he stole a pass by Nolan Schaefer from behind the net and wrapped it around for the score. John de Gray netted the tying goal at the 6:08 mark on a short-handed goal as he skated down the right wing a wristed a shot that beat Schaefer. Houston again outshot the Chops in the second period 10-8, but the teams were tied going into the final frame.

It was all Chops in the third period as Petteri Wirtanen scored a power play goal at the 8:53 mark to give the Chops their first lead of the game. That was quickly followed by Kirk MacDonald’s first goal of the season on a rebound at the 10:01 mark giving Iowa a 4-2 lead. The Aeros did not record their first shot of the third period until nearly 16 minutes ran off the clock in the final frame. Houston did make things interesting though when Jesse Schultz batted in a loose puck at the 18:58 mark with the extra attacker. The Aeros couldn’t score the equalizer in the final minute and lost their third game in four tries. Final score: Chops 4 - Aeros 3.

Notes:
- Houston jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period for just the third time this season. Houston is now 1-1-0-1 when taking a two-goal lead into the second intermission.
- Kolanos tallied his fifth multiple-goal game of the season with his two first period goals. The Aeros lost their first game when Kolanos records multiple goals and are 3-1-0-1 during such games.
