SAINT PAUL/MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. Minnesota Wild Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Risebrough announced today that the National Hockey League (NHL) club has recalled right wing Kyle Wanvig (WON-vihg) from the Houston Aeros of the American Hockey League (AHL), the teams primary development affiliate.
Wanvig, 21 (1/29/81), has totaled 15 points (8-7=15) in 17 games for the Aeros this season while leading the team in penalty minutes (52) and tying for the lead in power play goals (4). He ranks third on the team in shooting percentage (23.5) and has chipped in two game-winning goals to go with a +2 plus/minus rating.
The 6-foot-2, 219-pound right wing tallied six goals and 13 points (6-7=13) in 34 games last season for the Aeros but missed 45 contests due to an ankle injury. The Calgary, Alberta native led Red Deer to the 2001 Memorial Cup Championship scoring 22 points (10-12=22) in 22 postseason games and captured the Stafford Smythe Memorial Trophy as the MVP of the Memorial Cup Tournament.
He was selected by the Wild in the second round (36th overall) of the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. He re-entered the draft after originally being selected by the Boston Bruins in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft (3rd round, 89th overall). He will be here in Minnesota for Mondays game versus Vancouver and wear sweater No. 27.
