Houston, TX – Fedor Fedorov and Nolan Baumgartner each tallied third-period goals, as the Manitoba Moose snapped a six-game winless streak with a 3-1 win over the Houston Aeros at Toyota Center. Mikko Jokela also scored and Alex Auld stopped 27 shots for Manitoba, which had been 0-5-1 in its last six.

Zbynek Michalek scored in the third period and Johan Holmqvist made 35 saves for Houston, which is 2-3-1 on a seven-game homestand that finishes Thursday against Milwaukee at 7 p.m.

Jokela scored the only goal of the game’s opening 40 minutes, getting a long wrister from the point through a screen in front. The puck snuck past Holmqvist for Jokela’s second goal of the season late in the first period.

Fedorov made it 2-0 just 3:07 into the third with a highlight-reel goal. He intercepted an errant pass, skated around a check and beat Holmqvist low for his team-best seventh tally of the season.

Manitoba went up 3-0 at 13:14 of the third, as Baumgartner – in his first game since being sent down from Vancouver – banked one off a Houston defender in front and into the back of the net.

The Aeros tried to mount a comeback late, and did get Michalek’s power play goal with 1:14 left to avoid the shutout. With Derek Boogaard and Mark Cullen battling in front, the puck squirted back to Michalek, whose shot went off a Moose player in the slot and into the net. The goal was Michalek’s second, and both have come on the power play. Boogaard picked up his first AHL assist in six games on the play.

Houston went 1-for-5 on the power play, while Manitoba finished 0-for-5. The Aeros have killed off all but one of their 37 shorthanded chances this season. The Moose outshot Houston 38-28, the first time this season that the Aeros have been outshot. Their 28 shots were also a season low.
