HOUSTON - Minnesota Wild General Manager Chuck Fletcher today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed center Joel Broda to a three-year entry-level contract.
Broda, 20 (11/24/89), recorded 73 points (39-34=73) and 65 penalty minutes (PIM) in 66 games to help lead the Calgary Hitmen to the top regular season record in the Western Hockey League in 2009-10. He led the WHL with 23 power play goals and ranked first on the team in goals and third in scoring. Broda added 17 points (13-4=17) in 23 playoff contests leading the WHL with 13 postseason goals and five power play markers as the Hitmen advanced to the Memorial Cup. The 6-foot-1, 203-pound native of Yorkton, Saskatchewan, tallied three points (2-1=3) in four Memorial Cup contests.
He split the 2008-09 WHL season between Moose Jaw and Calgary and combined to notch 53 goals and 87 points in 67 games. Broda led the WHL in goals and ranked eighth in scoring. He was originally selected by the Washington Capitals in the fifth round (No. 144) of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.
Broda is one of 36 players currently participating in the Wild’s Development Camp this week.
