CALGARY Minnesota Wild prospect Josh Harding won the Four Broncos Memorial Trophy as the Western Hockey League Player of the Year. He also won the Del Wilson Trophy as the top goaltender. Harding is only the sixth player in the history of the WHL to win both awards in the same year.
Harding, 18 (6/18/1984), played 53 games for the Regina Pats. He faced a league-high 1,798 shots in route to posting 18 wins, 24 losses and 13 ties. He recorded a 2.75 goals against average and had the leagues second-best save percentage at .914. He also posted three shutouts as his team set a WHL futility record with only 171 goals in 72 games.
The Regina, Saskatchewan-native served as back-up to Dieter Kochan in one game for the Minnesota Wild in January. After the Pats were eliminated from the playoffs, Harding joined the Aeros for practice until returning to Calgary for Thursdays award ceremony.
I was coming (to the awards ceremony) hoping for one, Harding told the Calgary Sun. But that Four Broncos award means a lot to me. Its a big honor to have my name on that trophy.
Harding was drafted by Minnesota in the 2nd round, 38th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.
